And before I get started, let me clarify... I'm not talking about "that mom" who thinks it's cool to hang with her kid's friends on weekends or the mom who dresses like she's 22 when she's actually 42.
You know the type—Amy Poehler played her character in the movie Mean Girls—yeah—I'm not talking about that kinda' mom.
When a woman becomes a mom, the last thing on her mind is being hip. In a perfect world, mom’s everywhere would love to be able to balance it all—but—we don’t live in a perfect world and being "the cool mom" isn’t really a priority to a mom who barely has time to brush her teeth, let alone do much of anything else.
FAST FORWARD AND HER CHILDREN GROW UP!
They start school; eventually jr. high and high school and even college. Your time as a mom isn't as demanding as it used to be and you actually have time to think about YOU again.
It’s also about this time when you begin to take notice on things you used to love, pre-mom days of course. Things like clothes, hair, makeup and–YES–even social media.
So the other day when someone mentioned I was a hip mom, that made me smile. Not only because I’m mid-40’s but because it gave me some sort of validation—and maybe validation is too big a word—but it gave me a sense of knowing that my outward appearance and my inner personality speak for themselves; and people actually notice.
But it got me thinking...
WHAT EXACTLY MAKES A HIP MOM?
So I created a list of 10 fun things, I think, makes a mom— “A Hip Mom”
She stays fit.
She speaks fluent emoji.
She has a sense of humor and knows how to make her kids laugh.
She knows, at her age, there are fashion boundaries but can still rock those ripped jeans.
She knows the difference between being her kids BFF vs. being their best friend. (because there is a difference)
She’s on Snapchat and actually knows how to use it.
She keeps up with social media, current events and the world of Millennials.
She embraces her age but remains young at heart.
She owns a leather jacket, maybe two.
She isn’t afraid of the selfie and what anybody has to say about it.
AND IF SHE FEELS REALLY fun, SHE plays WITH GLITTER.
(...it keeps me young)
